About The Scholarship

The SBW Berlin Scholarships for International Students are now accepting applications and will remain open until they are filled. The SBW Berlin Scholarship provides financial assistance to young people from other countries who come from families with low incomes and who intend to use the knowledge they obtain during their time spent studying in Germany to advance long-term charitable endeavors, preferably in the countries in which they were born.

This scholarship to study on the European continent is awarded for Bachelor's and Master's programs in Berlin and Potsdam on the basis of the student's academic qualifications, personal aptitudes, and social needs. The scholarship can be used for either program. In general, funding is available for all areas of the scientific and artistic fields. In exceptional circumstances, the scholarship program may also provide financial assistance for participants to participate in vocational training in Berlin or Potsdam. It is not possible to receive funding for studies completed in your home country or in any of the other federal states that make up Germany.

The SBW Berlin scholarship program stipulates that the students' time in Berlin is restricted to the period of time that they are actively enrolled in classes. This scholarship is provided by SBW Berlin in the form of a loan, and it must be paid back after the funding period has come to an end. If they finish their education and go back to their home country afterward, they do not have to worry about having to repay the loan.

Program Details

  • Host Institution: Universities in Berlin or Potsdam, Germany.
  • Field of Study: Available programs at host universities.
  • Number of awards: 20 scholarship. However, the program can award as many scholarships as there are vacancies.
  • Duration: Minimum of 30 days and a maximum of 48 months, depending on the standard duration of studies in the discipline you have chosen.
  • Target group: Open to citizens of Europe, Africa, Asia and South America.

SBW Berlin bears the necessary living expenses of the scholarship holders for the duration of their scholarship. A full scholarship includes:

  1. a room in shared student flats in Berlin
  2. cost-of-living allowance in the amount shown below. In the first semester, the scholarship holders receive a living allowance of €450. In the following semester, the scholarship holders can receive a living allowance up to a maximum of 550 euros per month.
  3. The amount of the grant depends on the rating of your project and will be calculated as follows:
    • 95 – 100 points 550 Euro
    • 90 – 94 points 500 Euro
    • 85 – 89 points 450 Euro
    • 80 – 84 points 425 Euro
    • 75 – 79 points 400 Euro
    • 70 – 74 points 375 Euro
    • 60 – 69 points 350 Euro
    • 50 – 59 points 325 Euro.

  2. possibly also a travel allowance for your journey to Berlin before the start of your studies and for the journey home after you have completed your studies.

First payments can only be made after the scholarship holder moved into the student flat.

What are the SBW Berlin Scholarships?

The SBW Berlin Scholarships are a unique opportunity for international students who wish to pursue graduate education in Germany. The scholarship offers a one-time award of up to €7,500 per month and is available to students from outside of the European Union.

The scholarship supports one year of studies and pays tuition fees up to €14,000 per year. The deadline is January 15th. Please note that this scholarship is not open to German or EU citizens but only those who do not hold a German or EU passport.

The SBW Berlin Scholarship programme is open to international students with a first-class degree from an internationally recognised university. The scholarship provides funding for doctoral studies in the fields of business, law, social sciences and natural sciences at one of the two campuses of the University of Economics and Law (HWR), or one of the three campuses in Sciences (HU).

All applications are assessed by a selection committee appointed by SBW and representatives from HU. To apply, you must submit an online application form, provide supporting documents as requested on the form and submit your application within the prescribed deadline. Applications will be assessed and recipients notified in December.

  • Students from EU and EEA countries who have already worked in Germany in an activity related to their studies, before taking up their studies
    • Students from EU/EEA countries with permanent right of residence as defined by the Freedom of Movement Act (Freizügigkeitsgesetz EU).
    • between 18 and 30 years old
    • average grades correspond with a German grade point average of at least 2.0
  • application before the start of their university education or fully enrolled in the first, second or max. third semester at a state-recognized university (in Germany or abroad) or application for a Master’s degree shortly before or after obtaining a Bachelor’s degree
  • able to prove that they have not stayed in Germany for more than 18 months before the application
  • no first-degree family members who reside permanently in Germany
  • strong intention to work in their country of origin for at least 18 months after graduation
  • professional or Volunteer experience in the non-profit sector and
  • able to prove a relatively low net income.
