He later inaugurated it as the Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore on December 7, 1921.
In 2021, the QS World University Rankings ranked its law and legal studies in the top 100, its economics and econometrics in the top 150, its agriculture and forestry in the top 180, its accounting and finance in the top 200, and its business and management in the top 250. 2) John Cabot University

John Cabot University is an American university in Rome, Italy offering programs like Art History, International Affairs, and Business Administration. It started in 1972 as an affiliate of Hiram College in Ohio and grew to become an independent university in 1991. Previously, it assumed the name John Cabot International College. In 1978, many of the students were business majors, while a few of them enrolled in an Associate of Arts degree. Beginning in 1985, the university introduced programs in the fields of English Literature, International Affairs, and Art History.

Moreover, it is one of the leading and most prestigious in the entire European continent. It has campuses in Forli, Rimini, Ravenna, and Cesena, plus a branch center in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Furthermore, the university has Collegio Superiore di Bologna, a school of excellence.
For 2020, the QS World University Rankings placed the institution at 177th place in the world. Moreover, it is first place in Italy and 74th in the world for academic reputation. On the other hand, THE World University Rankings placed the University of Bologna in 168th place globally for the same year.
7) Sapienza University of Rome
IELTS Band Requirement: overall score of 6
The Sapienza – Universita di Roma or the University of Rome, is a research university that is one of the oldest institutions in the world. It started in 1303 as Universita Degli Studi di Roma “La Sapienza.” It often ranks first not only in Italy but also in Southern Europe. Many of its alumni became Nobel laureates, heads of nations, European Commissioners, Presidents of the European Parliament, scientists, astronauts, and notable religious figures.
This university in Italy requires that you have at least an IELTS Band of 6.5. If you don’t have an IELTS score above that, you should study harder or look for other universities in Italy that require a lower IELTS band.

General Language Requirements (Undergraduate)
Language requirements vary according to university. That said, you should check your university’s official website for its stipulations regarding language proficiency.
For example, there are no specific Italian language requirements at the University of Bologna – the oldest university in the world – except for Nursing or Medicine applicants.
Although this is the case, the university advises its applicants to have a basic knowledge of Italian – level A2 (beginner) – so that the student can make the most out of their studies.
As for English proficiency, applicants should have the following scores:
- IELTS = 5.5
- TOEFL PBT = 507 to 557
- TOEFL CBT = 180 to 217
- TOEFL IBT = 80 to 99
At the University of Pisa, those who wish to study an Italian course are expected to have an Italian language level of B2 (intermediate competence). As for English proficiency, certain degrees have test requirements. Such is the case for Veterinary Science applicants, who need an IELTS band of at least 5.
General Language Requirements (Graduate)
Language requirements are stricter for post-graduate applicants, so you should check your university portal for the details.
Take the case of the University of Pisa. In its Master of Science in Space Engineering program, having an IELTS or TOEFL is not mandatory, although it is a preferential criterion for student admission. The department leans towards applicants with an IELTS band of 7 or a TOEFL score of 250 (CBT) or 550 (PBT).
Application Requirements (Undergraduate)
Most Italian universities require their international applicants to submit the following documents:
- Copy of passport
Resume or curriculum vitae
- Official transcript from the institution where you completed your secondary studies (with the course and grades)
- Proof of language proficiency
The other necessary documents at the University of Pisa will depend on the academic department. Because of the high number of applicants in some programs, some may also require an applicant to undergo a selective entrance examination.
As for the University of Bologna, international students also need to submit a personal statement and two recommendation letters. Some degrees also require an SAT exam.
